Managing the Costs of Care
Navigating the financial side of a dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) diagnosis can be overwhelming. Below are curated resources to help you lower out-of-pocket costs, understand your insurance rights, and access financial assistance.
Medication Pricing & Assistance
Don’t pay full price for your prescriptions. Many DCM medications have significant discount options available if you know where to look.
How to Find Discounts:
- Check the Manufacturer: Look at your prescription bottle for the company name. Search their website for “Patient Assistance Programs” (PAPs) or “co-pay coupons.”
- Go Generic: FDA-approved generics provide the same active ingredients as brand names but typically cost 80–85% less.
- Consult Your Team: Ask your doctor or pharmacist if they have manufacturer coupons.
Tip:
Ask your doctor if a 90-day supply will lower your average cost per pill compared to a 30-day supply.
Key Medication Resources:
- Cost Plus Drugs: A transparently priced pharmacy offering common heart medications at a fraction of retail cost.
- GoodRX & SingleCare: Comparison tools for local pharmacies. Tip: Sometimes the cash price is lower than your insurance copay.
- The Assistance Fund (TAF): Helps with high-cost specialty medications and premiums. 1-844-282-5802
- NeedyMeds: A comprehensive database of manufacturer Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs).
Tip:
If your pharmacy says a medication is denied, ask your doctor’s office to submit a “Prior Authorization.” This is often the first step before a formal appeal is needed.
Insurance Guidance & Appeals
If your insurance denies coverage for a treatment, device, or medication, you have the right to appeal.
- The Right to Appeal: If the prior authorization is denied, you can file a formal appeal. National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF) provides digital toolkits to help you navigate denials and understand your rights.
- Medicaid Help: State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provides free, local counseling for Medicaid beneficiaries.
- Case Management: The Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) offers professional case management for insurance, debt, and job-retention issues. 1-800-532-5274
Financial Support & Grants
Direct financial aid is available to help cover medical and non-medical costs.
- Genetic Testing: Genetic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Consortium offers free genetic testing options for qualified individuals.
- PAN Foundation: Grants for out-of-pocket treatment costs for underinsured patients. 1-866-316-7263
- HealthWell Foundation: Assistance with copays, premiums, and deductibles. 1-800-675-8416
Social Security Disability: If your DCM prevents you from working, you may be eligible for SSDI. Visit the Social Security Compassionate Allowances page, as certain advanced heart conditions qualify for expedited processing.
AED (Defibrillator) Programs
For patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, an AED at home can be life-saving. Think of an AED as the “home version” of the ICD device in your chest.
- AED Grant Program: Corporate-sponsored grants to help individuals purchase AEDs at a reduced cost.
- One Beat CPR & AED: Offers discounted AED packages and home-use training.
Dealing with Medical Debt
If you are struggling with hospital bills, you may qualify for “Charity Care,” a legal requirement for most hospitals to forgive debt for those below certain income levels.
- Dollar For: Helps patients check eligibility and apply for hospital “Charity Care” to reduce or eliminate bills.
- Upsolve: A free tool to help navigate medical debt and financial distress.
